How to use the ERA Reverb Remover plugin

Want to know how to remove reverb from audio? The ERA Reverb Remover’s interface is intuitive yet highly effective - let’s take a closer look.

    Processing Dial

The processing dial is used to set how much reverb removal is applied to your signal. The further you turn it the greater the amount of reverb removal applied.

Use this slider to set the output level of your signal from Reverb Remover.

    Auto Switch

The auto switch turns automatic make-up gain on and off. This is useful as sometimes the reverb removal process can affect the output level of your signal.

    A/B Switch

Use this switch to compare your current ERA Reverb Remover parameter settings with the previous settings you dialled in to work out which sounds better. Perfect for voice reverberation comparisons!

The Focus options allows you to target certain areas of the frequency spectrum for reverb removal. The options are - from left to right - the whole frequency spectrum, low frequencies, high frequencies, mid frequencies and low and high frequencies. It can also help eliminate echo vs reverb.

The ERA Reverb Remover works well with our other ERA Bundle audio clean up tools like the ERA De-Clipper and ERA De-Esser. Always be sure to put ERA Reverb Remover first in the chain as you want to get reverb out of your signal as early as possible.

    Frequently Asked Questions

    What is Reverb and Echo?

Reverb is when a sound is repeated several times in quick succession. It can happen for many different reasons, both intentionally and unintentionally. A common type of reverb is echo, which occurs within an enclosed space, as sound waves repeatedly bounce between surfaces. Microphone reverb is also an issue with certain setups. If you search for things like ‘how to remove reverb from sound or ‘how to get rid of reverb’’, a lot of the information will be useful for echo removal, too. You can watch this quick video for more information: Echo vs Reverb: What is the difference between delay echo and reverb?

Can you remove reverb? How do I remove reverb from sound?

There are a multitude of ways to do this, but the most popular (and time consuming) is to set specific noise gates in your editing and recording software. If set correctly, they pick up intended sounds, while filtering out quieter reverb sounds. Another common solution is to adjust the recording setup, which can eliminate reverb from the very beginning - recording in a place with noise dampening walls, for example, will not create much reverb. The easiest solution, however, is to use a plugin. Plugins like Reverb Remover do the hard work for you, reducing reverb quickly. With a simple dial adjustment you can have reverb-free audio, and no need to manually seek out reverb issues.

How do I remove echo and reverb from audio?

The process is similar to the above question, but echo specifically raises a few more issues. Echo can be loud, requiring a more hands-on, specific approach of removal. Plugins like Reverb Remover still do a great job of controlling echo however, so we recommend trying them out on echo-heavy audio.

    What is Dereverb?

When removing reverb from audio, the process is often referred to as a dereverb, de-reverb or de reverb action. It’s simply a way of describing this, but can also spill over to talking about mending echoey recordings. Dereverberation plugins often have names like these.

How do you reduce room reverb?

Room reverb is one of the most common types of reverb. Rooms are often untreated, meaning the walls and surfaces do not absorb sound waves. Instead, they reflect them, causing prominent reverb. The easiest way to reduce room reverb is to treat the room with softer surfaces and things like soundproof tiles. Then, use a simple plugin like Reverb Remover to get rid of any unwanted sounds that remain.

How do I reduce reverb in Audacity?

If you want to reduce reverb, Audacity is a great editor to do so in. Audacity reverb removal is simple, as the software is compatible with plugins like Reverb Remover. To remove reverb from audio, audacity specific instructions are available online.
