Audio Breath Control for Content Creators

Removing breathing from audio is difficult. Eliminating breaths fully can easily make a track sound unnatural. Balancing each breath manually is inefficient, and can take over your workflow. Use a simple plugin like De-Breath to handle these problems with ease:

  • Quickly salvage tracks that feature unwanted breathing audio.
  • Adjust the plugin to ensure a natural, organic sound.
  • Let De-Breath detect and isolate breath noise for you, saving a ton of time in editing.
  • Breath Control is not the only problem you’ll encounter

De-Breath comes as part of the ERA Standard and Pro Bundles. It’s a great package if you work with audio, whether that’s for a podcast, voice artistry, or to accompany video content. This all-in-one solution contains a series of single dial plugins - De-Esser, Mouth De-Clicker, Reverb Remover, De-Breath, Voice Leveler, Plosive Remover, Noise Remover, Voice AutoEQ, Voice Deepener, De-Clipper, and the Audio Clean-Up Assistant. Together, they can solve any audio issue you are facing.

For those of you wanting more control and options, our Pro version features an additional Room-Tone Match tool, as well as more advanced plugins: Noise Remover Pro, Reverb Remover Pro, and De-Esser Pro.

How to Clean-Up Breath Noise with the ERA De-Breath plugin

De-Breath removes breath noise, fast. Let’s take a quick look at the interface:

    Main Dial

This controls how much processing is applied to the track. At low values, breaths are subtly attenuated for a natural sound. Medium processing reduces breath sounds even further. The highest values completely remove breaths from your track.

    Sensitivity

De-Breath’s Sensitivity bar controls the number and duration of breaths in the track. We recommend beginning with the default value, then adjusting as required. Tracks with short and intense breath sounds may require higher sensitivity to increase listenability. Lower sensitivity can help other tracks where breath sounds are more natural and longer in duration.

    Monitor Button

A small button located on the left of the plugin, this feature allows you to hear exactly what De-Breath is detecting as breaths. Use this to pinpoint the exact sensitivity settings you need.

    Frequently Asked Questions

    How do you use De-Breath?

After subscribing or starting a free trial to the ERA Bundle, you can find further instructions here. For full compatibility information, look here.

How do you get rid of Vocal Breaths?

With a lot of time and effort, unless you use a plugin to help! Manually seeking out, removing then fine tuning breaths is a complex editing process, and often results in unnatural sounds or inconsistent effects. By using a plugin like De-Breath, your track’s breaths are automatically detected, ready for you to use a simple dial for controlling them.

How do you record your voice without breath?

You can’t. You have to breathe to live, so voice recordings have to feature some degree of breathing noise. That’s a good thing, however - audio with absolutely zero breaths often sounds unnatural and strange. The trick is to learn how to control breath sounds. That can be done via some recording techniques, like facing away from the microphone when breathing in. Or, via plugins like De-Breath. Plugins allow you to focus entirely on the recording, and control breaths in post!

Should you remove breaths from your vocals? How do you edit breathing out of a video?

Breaths can sound unsettling and distracting, but they’re a necessary part of a vocal recording or video’s audio. Most audio should feature subtle breath sound in order to sound natural; tracks completely devoid of breath noise often feel inhuman, mechanical, or over-edited. Rather than debating whether to remove breaths from your vocals, just use a plugin like DeBreath. An easy-to-adjust dial will let you find the perfect balance in your audio’s breaths.

    Does pop filter reduce breathing?

Not really. Pop filters are great for stopping harsh S, P and T sounds from striking the diaphragm of the microphone, but breathing noise will still get through it. Although we recommend always recording with a pop filter, you should also look at plugin solutions for breath control.

    Should I edit out breaths?

Yes, just don’t do it manually. It’s hard to get a natural, effective sound in a short time when editing breaths manually. Use a plugin to detect all breaths in your track, then adjust them to get the sound you desire.

How to make your voice sound professional in Adobe Audition?

Repair, then optimize. Use repair plugins to deal with any issues in the audio, such as clipping, background noise, mouth sounds, or breath noise. Then, use optimization plugins to perfect the levels, deepness and equalization of your track. These processes will make any audio sound professional, providing a perfect baseline for you to then focus on your vocal delivery and voice acting skills!

How do you remove breathing from audio in Audition?

Use an Audition-compatible plugin, like De-Breath. It’s designed to run flawlessly in Adobe Audition, so can be used right there in the interface. A plugin is far quicker and more efficient than manually seeking/adjusting in the Audition timeline.
